Extended techniques

An extended technique uses an instrument in a different way than it is normally played to create a new sound. Harmonics on string instruments, which involve touching one’s finger(s) on a string at specific intervals to create a warm-sounding tone at a different frequency, are a common example of extended techniques.

Extended techniques can be used to create tones that are very warm and pleasant-sounding (bowed vibraphone) or tones that are high-pitched and dissonant (playing the cello beneath the bridge).
